Privacy Policy
Effective 20 October 2026Who is responsible
MovieBin is published by Ben Blankenburg (“we”). Contact: ben.blankenburg@icloud.com.
What we process and why
- Your account. Email address, and the name Apple or Google share with us if you sign in with them. Used to create and secure your account (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, performance of contract).
- Your library. The films you save, watched and favourite flags, your movie groups, and the clip links you share or paste, with the matches we found for them. Used to provide the app (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Clip identification (AI). When you share or paste a clip link, we read the clip’s public caption, description, comments, auto-generated transcript and thumbnail image, directly from the platform or through our data provider Bright Data. This public text and a link to the thumbnail are sent to an AI model (Google Gemini) through OpenRouter, which names the film; candidate titles are checked against The Movie Database (TMDB). Public posts can contain other people’s names or comments; we use them only to identify the film. We do not download the video file, and we send no account details (no email, account ID or sign-in token) to these providers. Public results are cached for about 30 days and then deleted so the same clip is not fetched twice (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Sharing problems. If something is shared to MovieBin that the app cannot read, it records only the type and length of what arrived (never the content), to fix sharing from other apps. Kept for 30 days (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Security and abuse prevention. Request counters per account and technical logs (Art. 6(1)(f), legitimate interest in a secure, affordable service).
- Advertising. If you do not have MovieBin Plus, the app shows ads from Google AdMob. Google may process app and device identifiers (the advertising identifier on iPhone only if you allow tracking), IP address, coarse location and ad interactions. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland we ask for your consent through Google’s consent form before any personalised ads (Art. 6(1)(a)); without consent you see non-personalised ads. You can change your choice any time in Profile → Ad privacy choices. See how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
- App usage analytics. To see which features are used and fix what does not work, the app records usage events with PostHog, hosted in the EU (Frankfurt): app opens, screens viewed and actions such as adding a film, sharing a clip or starting a purchase, with your device model, OS and app version, linked to your MovieBin account ID. We do not record your email, search text or which films you watch, and we do not use this data for advertising or share it with others. In the EU/EEA, the UK and Switzerland nothing is recorded unless you allow it when asked in the app (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, § 25(1) TDDDG). Elsewhere it is on by default. Everyone can turn it off any time in Profile → Share usage data; the app keeps working the same.
- Purchases. MovieBin Plus is sold through the App Store or Google Play; Apple or Google process the payment. We use RevenueCat to check your subscription status, linked to your MovieBin account ID. We never see your payment details.
Service providers
Supabase (database, authentication and server functions; hosted in Frankfurt, Germany), Bright Data, OpenRouter and the model provider it routes to, TMDB, Google (AdMob, Google Sign-In), Apple (Sign in with Apple, App Store), RevenueCat, and PostHog (app usage analytics; EU hosting in Frankfurt, Germany). Some of these providers are located in the United States; transfers rely on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long we keep data
Account and library data are kept until you delete your account. Clips stay in your Clips tab for up to 90 days (the latest 100) unless you remove them sooner. Cached public clip data is deleted about 30 days after it expires. Request counters are removed in regular clean-ups after their time window ends. Deleting your account (Profile → Delete account) permanently erases your account, library, groups and clip history from our database, revokes MovieBin’s access to your Sign in with Apple account, and deletes your analytics data at PostHog and your customer record at RevenueCat. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription; cancel it in your Apple ID settings.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict and port your data, to object to processing based on legitimate interests, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. Email us to exercise these rights. You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority.
Children
MovieBin is not directed at children under 13 (under 16 in the EEA), and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We will update this page when our processing changes and show the new effective date above.
